The French Facility for Global Environment (FFEM) supports innovative environmental projects in developing countries.
It was created by the French government in 1994, following the first Earth Summit. The FFEM has already supported more than 333 projects in more than 120 countries, two-thirds of which are in Africa. The FFEM works in partnership with public, private and civil-society stakeholders in both the South and the North, as well as with other donors and international organizations. The projects it finances generate local environmental, social and economic benefits. They not only help preserve biodiversity, climate, international waters, land, and the ozone layer, but also fight pollution.
What makes the FFEM special is that it focuses on pilot projects in order to learn from them and to disseminate their innovations on a broader scale.
AT THE MID-TERM MARK
The 2019-2022 strategic cycle has seen the FFEM budget grow by 30%. This is a milestone for the fund, whose strength and legitimacy are growing — even amidst the health crisis — as we face the urgency of the environmental crisis. The first half of the current term has been a success, with approximately one-third of the projects in this four-year term having been initiated and one-third identified.

MID-TERM REVIEW
The FFEM will continue to structure its action in the coming years thanks to our proven operating method. Several aspects set us apart and form our identity: we innovate to disseminate solutions, we capitalise on and scale up best practices, we support the building up of sustainable value chains, and we make use of integrated and concerted approaches.

The FFEM is promoting transition to circular economy models that include the entire life cycle of products. We help make the following a reality: value chains that feature eco-design and bio-economy; low-carbon consumption; reduction at the source; alternatives to polluting products; and sustainable waste management.
